A useful checklist for homeowners, businesses and project teams comparing electrical installation services in Mbarara and Western Uganda.

Start with the work you actually need

Finding an electrician in Mbarara is easier when your enquiry describes the job clearly. A complete installation for a new house is different from investigating a tripping circuit or connecting a water pump. Tell the contractor whether the property is occupied, what equipment is involved and when access is available.

For a new build, share floor plans and the intended use of each room. For a business, include major appliances, operating hours and any equipment that must remain powered. For a fault, describe the symptoms without opening panels or touching damaged accessories to gather information.

Ask about the appropriate installation permit

Uganda’s Electricity Regulatory Authority publishes information about electrical installation permits. Ask who will be responsible for the work and how you can verify that the person’s permit is current and appropriate to the proposed scope. A company name or a social-media profile does not answer that question.

The ERA guidance distinguishes company permits from the permits held by individuals undertaking installation work. Use the authority’s current information when checking requirements, because permit categories and rules can change. Do not rely solely on an old certificate photograph.

Compare an itemised scope

A quotation should make the work understandable. Look for the installation areas, materials, quantities or allowances, testing requirements and exclusions. Establish whether chasing, making good, scaffolding or specialist access is included or provided by another contractor.

Two totals are difficult to compare if one quotation includes distribution-board work and another only covers final circuits. Ask questions about substitutions, delivery, the work programme and how changes will be agreed. A clear scope protects the project from assumptions that become disputes later.

Discuss testing and handover before work starts

Ask what inspection and testing records will be provided and how circuits will be identified. You should also understand the operating guidance for any new equipment and who to contact if a problem arises. These details belong in the project discussion, rather than being left until the final day.

If you plan to add solar, an inverter or a generator later, mention it now. Essential circuits, space and cable routes can be considered during the main installation. The future equipment still needs its own assessment, but early coordination can reduce avoidable rework.

Choose a contractor who understands the site

Local access and clear communication matter, particularly when several trades share a building. Explain whether the work is in central Mbarara, elsewhere in Western Uganda or at a more remote site. Discuss travel, storage, working hours and the people authorised to make decisions.
